“Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”
Hebrews 12 v1.
Paul in his epistle to the jewish Christians was of course exhorting them to spread the good news of salvation through the blood of Christ and that is the one thing we should have in of mind at all times.
However, the fight to take the United Kingdom out of the EU and hopefully in the process bring down the Union itself is nearly as important.
The quotation above has acted as a spur to me when facing many, seemingly, impossible tasks in my life. It also applies to the task in hand. Let us consider the text.
“Wherefore, seeing as we are compassed about by so great a cloud of witnesses” , in this comparison refers to the great masses of the electorate. Kept in ignorance by successive governments as to the purpose of the European Project. Many of the electorate still, despite our successes in June, don’t know why we need to leave the EU and even those who support leaving the EU need to be warned of the consequences of remaining in the EU and that by voting for any party other than UKIP we will be dragged even further into the EU.
“let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us”, in this instance the ‘weight’ are the burdens of everyday life that we all have to bear, earning a living, raising a family, keeping a roof over our heads, all the things that occupy our working day.
‘the sin’ refers to worldly pleasures, that, just like in our Christian lives, draw us away from our task.
Thus the weights and sins detract us from the task in hand.
“Let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” It is a race that we are taking part in. Some of you who have been members from the start of the party have truly been involved in a marathon. But, the city spires are in sight, with 125 days to the election once we start the new year, the finishing line truly beckons. This, apart from the day we were each saved, could be the most important 125 days of our lives.
The consequences if we fail are too horrendous to contemplate.
We should always be mindful that we are not alone in this fight against evil, as Paul goes on to say in the 2nd verse of Hebrews 12 :-
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God”.
If our cause is righteous, and I am convinced it is, and we pray to God for guidance and success, then if it is His will, we will succeed.
